While it seems like summer just started, it’s actually time for young athletes and their parents to start thinking about fall.

Not back to school per se – it really is too early for that – but fall sports, and specifically the sports physicals that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association requires for participating athletes.

Once again Stevens Point Orthopedics will be offering complimentary sports physicals and Baseline ImPACT concussion testing.

For any young athlete playing a contact sport – and that’s just about any young athlete – baseline testing is extremely important. If an athlete suffers a concussion, the test results provide better data and allow for quicker return to play.

There are three dates to circle on your calendar when sports physicals will be available:

  • Tuesday, June 25
  • Wednesday, July 17
  • Monday, July 29

Appointments are encouraged, and are available from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the above dates.

If you forget to make an appointment, no problem! Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis between 3 p.m.-6 p.m. on those dates.

Athletes need to wear their eyeglasses or contacts as well as athletic shoes. They also need to have WIAA participation, history and permission forms filled out – which you can access here.

In addition to forms, shoes, and glasses, there’s one more thing you can bring to your sports physical: Back-to-school supplies.

We weren’t going to mention the BTS thing, but SPO is happy to once again be a donation site for Project Fresh Start.

Project Fresh Start provides qualifying K-12 students in Portage County with free school supplies – backpacks, notebooks, markers, pencils, and more.

The more you donate to Project Fresh Start, the more kids can get back to school ready to learn.
