Protecting Your Kids in the Sun

After a long cold winter there is nothing better than being able to spend time outside in the warmth of the sun. With the severe cold that swept the Midwest for much of the winter, we’re sure your children have been itching to spend a day in shorts and t-shirts! Before they head outside on the next warm day, make sure they are fully protected. Check out these tips to help keep your children safe from the sun!

Use Sunscreen

Our first tip is the most important! Always apply sunscreen to your children when they are going to be exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. This will help prevent skin damage and painful sunburn! Don’t forget to put extra sunscreen on ears, nose and feet. These are some of the most commonly burned areas of the body and a few of the most uncomfortable to burn too!

Apply Early and Often

Be sure to apply sunscreen early and often! This tip is so important we had to put it at number two. Being proactive is one of the best ways to prevent sun damage. If you know your child is going to be outside for an extended period of time, be sure to set a timer to reapply. Putting on sunscreen once does not work for most complexions and is a necessity for preventing skin damage.

Hydrate

Make sure your children hydrate! Being fully hydrated is not only good for you body, but it helps protect the largest organ your body has, the skin. A hydrated body can better defend against skin damage from UV rays and will also help to prevent dehydration and heat stroke.

Look Out for Reflected Light

Does your child seem to burn quicker in a pool or on a lake than they do in the yard? This is because water reflects the UV rays, intensifying the rays before they hit your skin! Snow does the same thing. This is why it is so easy to get burnt when you are swimming and forget to reapply your sunscreen.

Medicines Can Make You Sensitive to Sunlight

Some medications can make your child more susceptible to sunburn than others. Be sure to read all of the side effects and warning labels of your childrens medicine. If your child takes a medicine that warns about sun exposure be sure to buy a high SPF sunscreen and keep them well hydrated.

By following these five tips, you can help protect your child from sun damage while still letting them enjoy the warm weather.
